As a yoga guide I am engaged in daily conversations about the do's and don'ts of weight, diet & exercise. People of all ages want to know how to lose weight, eat healthy and workout. Up until a few years ago I would have had a lot to say about how to be healthy. I would have told you exactly what to eat and what to not. I would have told you how often you should workout and what workouts would be best for you. I would have talked about how you could lose weight, something you will never hear me talk about today. But after spending time going down my own personal path of finding healthy and happiness, I've found that the truth to a healthy weight, diet and exercise is not obsessing over doing all the "right" things but more about doing what is right for you. Your health is not external but internal.
Diet trends come in and out of our lives like the passing of seasons. One day one things horrible for you while the next day it is the most nutritional thing you can eat. Fats, Carbs, Proteins you've heard of all of these things argued as good and bad. Confusing right? I would say so.
So how do you find your own healthy happy lifestyle? By starting to follow your own body and mind. Sure, eating vegetables, fruit, beans and grains are very important to your nutrition. Eating real food is crucial and should never be ignored. Real food is your body's natural fuel. Without it, your body and mind will not function properly.
Moving your body for mind and body health is of course important as well. However, moving your body in a way that stresses it out in any way can be arguably counter productive. Vigorous, demanding movement that makes you feel worn out and over worked are not necessarily nice for your body. I used to engage in physical activity that was extremely hard, I believed that the harder I worked, the more I sweated, the more I pounded, the better I would look and then ultimately feel. My external appearance was much more important to me for 10yrs then my internal health. This was a concoction for disappoint, depression and funny enough, bad health.
If your focus is on getting a six pack or fitting into your skinny jeans then your health is probably in danger of not being healthy at all.
There is a beautiful switch that turns on the day you decide to start making health decisions based on your insides rather then your outsides. The whites of your eyes become brighter, your skin glows and you lose weight without even realizing it. The labels that you used to hold yourself up too diminish, your mind becomes clearer, you become happier, and that makes the people around you happier.
The secret to health isn't on a food label, it's not found in an exercise machine or a diet book, it's found within you. Your health theoretically speaking, is free. It doesn't cost money to check in with your body, their's no diet to follow or fancy ingredients you need to buy.
Health is about flowing with the motions of feeling and listening in. :)
